Two decisions that separate a clean cut from a sloppy one
Trimming sounds like a trivial task, and mostly it is, but two choices decide whether the result sounds professional: exactly where you place the cut, and what you do at the edge of it.
Placement is a musical question. A cut a fraction of a second before a downbeat feels deliberate; the same cut a fraction after feels like an error, even when the gap is twenty milliseconds. Zoom into the waveform, find the transient — the sharp spike that marks a kick or snare hit — and put your boundary just ahead of it, not on top of it.
The edge is a technical problem instead. Audio almost never sits at zero at a random point in time, so cutting there makes the signal jump instantly, and that jump carries energy across every frequency at once — which your ear hears as a click. A fade of even ten milliseconds, far too brief to register as a fade, eases the signal down to silence and the click disappears.
Order of operations that saves you rework
Nail down the selection first, listen to it, and only then add fades — fades set before the boundaries are final just have to be redone. If you're pulling a loop for production, check that its length lines up with bars: at 120 BPM, one bar is exactly two seconds, so a four-bar loop should measure eight.
Deleting a section rather than keeping one means the join deserves a careful listen. Two spliced-together pieces of music read as seamless only when the energy either side matches and the phrasing lines up. A short fade on each side of the seam usually smooths over the rest.
- Place cuts just ahead of a transient, never on top of it
- A 10–30 ms fade kills a click without being audible as a fade
- For a musical outro, use a longer 1–3 second fade instead of a hard cut
- Check loops against tempo with 60 ÷ BPM × 4 to find one bar in seconds
Why this exports WAV instead of MP3
Lossy audio loses a bit more information every time it's decoded and re-encoded, and that loss adds up. Trimming an MP3 and saving it back as an MP3 forces a second full encode, which is why heavily edited lossy files often sound noticeably duller than where they started.
Staying lossless until the last possible step avoids that. Cut here, export WAV, run any further processing on that WAV, and encode to MP3 or AAC exactly once, when the file is truly finished. That single encode is the only place quality should be decided.
Common questions
