Spectrogram Myths: What the Image Can Actually Establish

Common visual myths
A sharp high-frequency edge usually reflects lossy encoding or sample rate. Rectangles may be edits; horizontal lines may be tones; dense clouds may be noise. None is a universal AI watermark.
What the display does well
Spectrograms reveal repeated passages, dropouts, edits, hum, broadband noise and frequency loss. Those are useful quality and assembly observations even when origin remains unknown.
A careful reading order
Check duration and axes, find obvious codec boundaries, compare repeated sections, inspect transitions, then confirm anything important by listening. Compare against a known export when possible.
